Read the Qur’an with understanding

Know the Arabic from a translation, read whole surahs, and keep every verse in its context.

  • 10 to 20 minutes a day
  • Four steps, then make it a habit
  • Any level
  • 4 steps

This path is for you if…

  • You read the Qur’an but would like to understand it better.
  • You see verses shared online and want to read them in context.
  • You want a reading habit that lasts beyond Ramadan.

By the end, you will…

  • Know the difference between the Qur’an and a translation of its meaning.
  • Read a whole surah with its meaning.
  • Read any shared verse in its place, before you share it.

The plan

Step by step.

Understanding grows when you know what you are reading and read it in its place. This is a self-guided plan: read, reflect, and make time to return.

  1. 1

    Step 1

Learn how the Arabic text and a translation differ.

The Arabic text is the Qur’an; an English translation conveys its meaning. Our reader labels the Arabic edition and the English translator separately. Read our guide on translation and tafsir, then learn how to read a reference like 2:255.

    Tips

    • When a verse is shared without a reference, look for one before you rely on it.
  2. 2

    Step 2

Read Surah Al-Ikhlas in full, in Arabic and English.

Read Surah Al-Ikhlas in full, in Arabic and in English. Then read our guide to the last three surahs, so you know what each ayah says.

    Tips

    • Read the whole surah before you read any explanation of it.
  3. 3

    Step 3

Read 49:13 inside its surah, not on its own.

Open Al-Hujurat 49:13 inside its surah. Read the ayat before and after it, and notice how the meaning grows when you see the whole passage. Questions about interpretation are best taken to qualified scholarship.

    Tips

    • Practise this with any verse you see shared this week.
  4. 4

    Every day after

Keep a short, steady habit. A missed day erases nothing.

Choose a reading amount that fits your time, even a few ayat, and keep it every day. Use the bookmark in our reader to keep your place, and write down one ayah that stayed with you each week.

    Tips

    • Missing a day does not erase your progress. Simply continue.

Common questions

Before you begin.

Which translation does this site use?

Saheeh International, through the Tanzil project. A translation conveys meaning; it is not the Qur’an itself.
