What is the purpose of fasting in Ramadan?
Quran 2:183 connects fasting with developing reverent awareness of Allah. The surrounding passage places the obligation alongside concessions and describes Ramadan as the month in which the Quran was revealed. Reading the passage together helps avoid two incomplete pictures: fasting as only a meal schedule, or fasting as hardship pursued without regard to the concessions in the text.
A useful personal goal is therefore more specific than “get through the day”. Decide how you will protect prayer, improve one recurring behaviour and make room to read the Quran with attention. These are planning suggestions, not additional conditions that determine the legal validity of a fast. Keep voluntary targets realistic enough to continue through work, study and family responsibilities.
When does Ramadan begin and why do countries differ?
Ramadan follows a lunar month, so its Gregorian dates move through the seasons. Sahih al-Bukhari 1909 connects beginning and ending the month to moon sighting and completing the count when the moon is obscured. Communities differ in how they apply sighting reports, geographic scope and astronomical calculations. A calendar prediction and a confirmed local announcement are different kinds of information.
Before the month, find out which recognised mosque or authority your community follows and where it publishes updates. Keep travel plans flexible around the expected beginning and Eid. The Deen Map’s calendar is a planning aid; its calculated date does not override a local announcement. This evergreen guide deliberately avoids labelling an unconfirmed future Gregorian date as certain.
When do I stop eating, and when is iftar?
Quran 2:187 gives the dawn boundary and instructs completion of the fast until night. In an ordinary local timetable, check Fajr for the beginning and Maghrib for sunset. Sunrise is later than Fajr and is not the point at which the fast begins. Recheck the selected city, date and time zone after travel or a clock change.
Suhoor is encouraged in Sahih al-Bukhari 1923, and Sahih al-Bukhari 1957 commends prompt breaking of the fast. Use a dependable local timetable and prepare before the boundary, rather than relying on a delayed notification or a livestream from another country. A separate imsak column needs its publisher’s explanation; do not silently substitute it for the Fajr calculation.
| Part of the day | Practical preparation |
|---|---|
| Before Fajr | Have suhoor, settle the intention and check the local dawn time |
| From dawn to sunset | Observe the fast and maintain the obligatory prayers |
| At Maghrib | Break the fast at the verified local sunset time |
| During the night | Plan nourishment, rest, prayer and the next day’s intention |
How do I make the intention to fast?
Intention is the resolve in the heart to perform the fast, not a pronunciation test. Knowing that you will fast Ramadan tomorrow and preparing suhoor for that purpose are different from merely skipping breakfast without any intention of worship. Learning a long formula should not become an obstacle for a new Muslim.
The timing details differ. The linked Shafi‘i explanation requires an intention during the night for each obligatory fast. The Hanafi explanation discusses a later intention before Islamic midday for a current Ramadan fast under its conditions. Do not transfer that concession automatically to a makeup fast. A straightforward routine is to settle your intention each night, and ask a teacher in your school if you forgot or are uncertain.
What if I eat, drink or make a mistake?
Intentional eating, drinking and daytime sexual intercourse are central matters addressed in fasting instruction, but the legal consequences depend on the act and circumstances. The Quran’s permission for marital relations during the night belongs within the same passage as its daytime fasting boundary. Do not assume that every mistake has the same consequence, or that paying a small donation resolves every case.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1933 specifically tells the person who eats or drinks forgetfully to complete the fast. That is a different situation from deliberately continuing after remembering. Questions about vomiting, menstruation, medical treatment or accidental swallowing deserve a precise account of what happened and school-specific advice. This guide does not provide a universal checklist for every medical procedure.
What should I do about illness, travel or medication?
The Quran explicitly addresses illness and travel in the fasting passage. Applying an exemption involves the actual circumstances, including whether a difficulty is temporary or continuing. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation, older age and chronic illness also raise distinct questions; they should not be collapsed into one blanket rule or one payment amount.
If you have diabetes or another condition affected by fasting, arrange advice from your healthcare team before Ramadan and discuss the religious implications with a qualified scholar. Diabetes UK recommends a plan covering medication, monitoring and when to break the fast. Do not stop prescribed medicine or ignore urgent symptoms to meet a self-imposed target. Medical safety decisions need clinical advice, not an online fasting calculator.
What is the difference between making up a fast, fidya and kaffarah?
Qada means making up a missed fast. Fidya concerns feeding compensation in specified circumstances, including certain continuing inability to fast. Kaffarah concerns expiation in particular cases. Which duty applies, whether duties combine and what form is acceptable require the relevant school’s rules. A charity’s donation button is not a diagnosis of your religious responsibility.
Keep a private record of days missed and the reason, then obtain qualified school-aware advice before choosing a payment or its timing. Do not automatically replace a temporary missed fast with fidya when you may be able to make it up. The linked charity page is only a general overview and donation route; local food costs and juristic approaches affect amounts, eligibility and timing. This guide does not derive a universal timing rule from that page or publish one currency figure as a worldwide rate.
How can I make a practical Ramadan routine?
Build the day around obligations and actual commitments before adding optional goals. Put the prayer timetable, work or school hours, care duties and rest on one page. Then choose a small Quran portion you can read attentively. The reading planner can divide a target across available days, but finishing by a particular date is not the only worthwhile way to study.
Give each voluntary activity a realistic place: a short reading after an established prayer, a planned act of generosity, or a manageable period of night worship. Taraweeh practices and unit counts vary between communities; learn the arrangement where you pray. Avoid judging another worshipper’s commitment from one visible routine when their health, care duties or circumstances are unknown.
- Save a reliable local timetable and the source of Ramadan announcements.
- Choose a Quran target with room for missed days and revision.
- Plan charity deliberately and distinguish zakat from voluntary giving.
- Review the routine after the first few days and reduce unrealistic optional targets.
What should I prepare before the end of Ramadan?
Check your community’s Eid announcement process and prayer arrangements in advance. Zakat al-Fitr is a separate end-of-Ramadan obligation, distinct from annual zakat on eligible wealth. Consult a trusted local authority or distributing charity for the relevant amount, recipients and timing, and allow enough time for the payment to reach its intended purpose.
Before the month ends, choose one practice to continue afterwards and review any outstanding questions about missed days. A useful record contains the dates, the issue to ask about and the advice received. It should help you follow through, not turn private worship into a public score or an unsupported claim of religious achievement.

Al-Baqara 2:185. Ramadan, revelation, illness and travel in the fasting passage.
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

Al-Baqara 2:187. The complete verse describing the dawn and night boundaries.
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.

Questions readers often ask
Can I keep eating until sunrise?
No. The fasting boundary is true dawn, associated with Fajr, rather than sunrise. Check your reliable local timetable and its method. A sunrise entry appears later and should not be used as the suhoor deadline.
Does accidentally eating mean my fast is broken?
The hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari 1933 addresses eating or drinking forgetfully and says to complete the fast. Other kinds of accidents and intentional actions need their own assessment; describe the circumstances accurately when seeking guidance.
Is a spoken Arabic intention required?
Intention is fundamentally the resolve in the heart. The cited scholarly explanations do not make mastery of an Arabic formula the condition. The timing requirements differ by school and by the kind of fast.
Can I use the calendar tool to decide the first day of Ramadan?
Use it to plan, while recognising that a calculated date may differ from the announcement adopted by your community. Check the relevant authority’s confirmed notice rather than treating a converter as a moon-sighting decision.
Can I pay fidya instead of making up every missed fast?
Fidya is not a general alternative chosen for convenience. Whether makeup, fidya or another obligation applies depends on why the fast was missed, future ability and the school followed. Seek advice before paying.
