Learning path 01 · Prayer

Rebuild your salah

Guard the five daily prayers first, then build on them one small, steady step at a time.

  • The five prayers, plus 10 minutes of learning a week
  • 4 weeks to begin
  • Any level
  • 3 steps

This path is for you if…

  • Your prayers have slipped, or were never steady.
  • You pray some prayers, but not all five.
  • You want to understand the words you say in salah.

By the end, you will…

  • Pray the five daily prayers in their time on most days.
  • Add the sunnah prayers one at a time, without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Know the meaning of Al-Fatihah and the words of ruku’ and sujud.

The plan

Step by step.

This path is for anyone whose prayer has slipped, or who never built a steady habit. It does not ask for everything at once. Begin with the obligatory prayers, keep them in their time, and let each new step settle before you add the next.

Return to this page each week, move one step forward, and be gentle with yourself on the days you fall short.

  1. 1

    Weeks 1 and 2

Guard the five fard prayers, on time, before anything extra.

Set the five times for your city and pray each prayer in its time, even if it is short. Do not try to add anything else yet. If you miss a prayer, do not give up on the whole day; pray the next one on time and keep going.

    Tips

    • Save the five times on your phone, and check them against your local masjid.
    • Tie each prayer to something you already do, such as Dhuhr with lunch or Maghrib with coming home.
    • Keep your wudu calm and simple. The guide shows each step.
  2. 2

    Week 3

Add the sunnah of Fajr, then Maghrib, one week at a time.

When the five feel steady, add one sunnah prayer. Start with the one before Fajr for a week, then add the one after Maghrib. One addition at a time is far easier to keep than many at once.

    Tips

    • Add the new prayer to the prayer you already never miss.
    • If a week is hard, stay with the five and try again next week.
  3. 3

    Week 4 and after

Learn the meaning of what you recite, one phrase each week.

Each week, choose one phrase you say in salah and learn its meaning. Begin with Al-Fatihah, which you recite in every rak’ah, then move to the words of ruku’, sujud and the tashahhud. Say the meaning in your mind as you pray.

    Tips

    • Read the English of Al-Fatihah once a day this week.
    • Write the phrase of the week on a small card and keep it where you pray.

Common questions

Before you begin.

What if I miss a prayer or a whole day?

Missing a day does not erase your progress. Pray the next prayer in its time and continue the plan. For how to make up prayers you have missed, ask a trusted scholar or your local masjid, because the schools differ on the details.

How do I know the right prayer times?

Use the prayer times on our homepage for your city, and follow your local masjid’s timetable where it differs.

Should I move faster if this feels easy?

Keep each step for its full week. A habit that feels easy is a habit that lasts, and the next step will come.
